Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio; San Pedro Valenzuela,Jaime; Schilling Quezada,Nilo Alejandro; Celis Contreras,César Eduardo; Hidalgo Rivas,José Alejandro; Cantín López,Mario.
Loth & Henneberg (1996) described a simple morphological feature for sex determination by observing the flexure of the posterior margin of the mandibular ramus, at the level of the plane occlusal. The purpose of this study is to analyze the level of agreement for determining the sex by observing the parameters described by Loth and Henneberg, in ortopantomography of totally dentate Chilean young adults. This study is based on 188 files of ortopantomography acquired from the Department of Radiology of the Dental School of Universidad de Talca, Chile. In brief, our studies indicated that in the ortopantomography of females 63.25% (62-64.5%) was correctly sexed, whereas the prediction accuracy was only 48.25% (46.550%) for men. The success...

Palatal Rugae: Systematic Analysis of its Shape and Dimensions for Use in Human Identification International Journal of Morphology
Hermosilla Venegas,Valeria; San Pedro Valenzuela,Jaime; Cantín López,Mario; Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio.
Establish a person's identity can be a very complex process, one of the main objectives of the forensic sciences. The analysis of the teeth, fingerprints and DNA comparison, are probably the most used technics, allowing fast and secure identification processes. However, these techniques can not always be applied, in some cases, it is necessary to apply different and less known techniques. In this work, a systematic analysis of the shape and dimensions of the palatal rugae was performed. We analyzed 120 subjects of both sexes, between 15 to 20 years olds, fully dentated, and by calcorrugoscopy were determined the shape, size, number and position of the palatal rugae. The most prevalent palatal rugae shape was sinuous (43%) followed by curve (27%), line...

Sexual Dimorphism Determination by Piriform Aperture Morphometric Analysis in Brazilian Human Skulls International Journal of Morphology
Cantín López,Mario; Suazo Galdames,Iván Claudio; Zavando Matamala,Daniela Alejandra; Smith,Ricardo Luiz.
The sex determination of human skeletons is important in forensic and anthropological research. It can be carried out through qualitative or quantitative analysis of morphological parameters of dimorphism. The shape of the piriform aperture is one of the classic indicators of sexual dimorphism since it describes differences between males and females according to strong population-specific behavior. The purpose of this study was to analyze the presence of sexual dimorphism in the size of the piriform aperture and its relationship with individual skin color. We used 90 human skulls from the Collection of the Federal Universidad de Sao Paulo (UNIFESP), with registered data on sex, age and skin color (classified as white, black and brown). The dimensions...

Sexual Dimorphism in Mesiodistal and Bucolingual Tooth Dimensions in Chilean People International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván; Cantín López,Mario; López Farías,Bernarda; Sandoval Marchant,Catherine; Torres Muñoz,Sebastián; Gajardo Rojas,Patricio; Gajardo Rojas,Marcelo.
The study investigates the presence of sexual dimorphism in the size of the permanent teeth among Chilean individuals. Mesiodistal and bucolingual diameters were measured in the teeth of 150 patients between 18 and 24 years old, 67 males and 83 females (excluded were third molars and pieces with large cavities and fillings). The largest were found in males; the differences in mean bucolingual diameters with p<0.05 were observed in pieces 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.6, 1.7, 2.6, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2, and 4.5; and with p <0.01, the relevant pieces were to 4.4 and 4.7. With regard to mesiodistal dimensions, the only significant difference p <0.05 was found in piece 1.2. These results show that sexual dimorphism can be found in all group teeth.
